On September 9th, we’ll join our good friends Luke Redfield and Bethany Larson at our favorite little venue in Minneapolis. This is an exciting gig as it feels like ages since we have crammed on stage at the 331 Club.

Luke Redfield is a musician who I have been honored to play with for nearly 2 years now. His songs are catchy and his lyrics are thought provoking. He is also one of my dearest pals and I never grow tired of gigging with him. Luke is a bit nomadic and we don’t get him year-round and, last I heard, he is planning to head back to Austin, TX soon. You might want to catch him while you can. This means, on this particular night, I’ll be pulling a double!

Bethany Larson has shared a bill with us once before and the 5 of us were quite impressed. She has an incredible voice and a real gift for weaving a melody. In the very least, I’m looking forward to this as an excuse to hear her again!

This flyer caught our attention for a couple of reasons: Not only were we intrigued by these wintry, decoupaged birds, but this is one hell of a lineup for a Thursday night. Ryan Paul and the Ardent will be joined by stellar singer-songwriters Luke Redfield, Brad Senne, and Holly Newsom of Zoo Animal.
Thanks Andrea!!

You’ll see that we added some from the Metro Magazine 100 Party, some from Janey Winterbauer sitting in with us, and some other oddities that we thought you might like to hear. We’re gonna keep adding as long as people keep recording. So please check back often.

CD Release Show will be Friday, June 19th at The 331 Club in Minneapolis with Eliza Blue, Brian Just, and Special Guests

The date is set and we are ready to roll. I am so pleased about our friends who will be joining us on stage at the 331 Club. Eliza Blue has played with us before and we love her music dearly. Brian Just is a musician I have followed for a good year now.  I have been so impressed with his songwriting and band.

I also want to take the time to recognize some of the musicians who came into the studio to help us out on a few tracks:

Janey Winterbauer has been one of my favorite vocalists in Minneapolis since the first time I heard her sing (which was November of 2007). I remember sitting at the Varsity Theater watching Janey and Marc perform and feeling my heart melt into my shoes. When I asked Janey to sing on La Vita Nuova, I was not sure what to expect. What we got was greatness. La Vita Nuova engineer, DP and I were grinning ear to ear. THE ARDENT and I are so grateful for her.

Jimmy Peterson and I go back a little bit further (whether he knows it or not). In 2001 I heard Home Late by Bellwether. I very quickly became a big fan. To this day I listen to Bellwether more than I care to admit. While Wilco, Ryan Adams, and The Jayhawks influenced me very much, Bellwether is the reason I play Americana music. I can also safely say that Bellwether is/was my favorite music group of my lifetime.
So… Jimmy Peterson (of Bellwether, Missing Numbers, The 757s) came in to grace our record with some guitar work that only he is capable of playing. We are forever indebted to Jimmy for the flavor he put on the tunes he played on.

I would also like to recognize Kevin Bowe for doing the mastering of La Vita Nuova. I couldn’t believe my ears when he said “yes”. The guy is a genious and a legend.

And who could forget THE ARDENT. I could gush for hours. They are my good friends. They are family. They are some of the most talented musicians I have ever played with.

So we’ll see you on June 19th. I am not sure on all the details yet, but it will be wild!

Well, it is official. We have a CD Release show on our hands. It feels like we have been working on this record forever (probably because we have been). The studio process has been hectic, but we have been having a blast. We have some special guests who are near and dear to my heart (and ears) performing on it. I think it is still a little early to spit out the names, but you’ll know soon enough.

I want to take the opportunity to explain what took so long. James, John, and I started working on this record in the summer of 2008. We were in a tiny studio and were having various friends come in playing drums and other instruments. The result did not come out sounding the way we wanted it to. Around that time, Steve Goold and Jaim Zuber joined THE ARDENT and they took on a completely different form. We were faced with the decision to release or throw out previous work we had done. Obviously we opted to start from scratch. I am so glad that we did!

Until I am allowed to give more information, here is the info on the release of La Vita Nuova

Ryan Pau & THE ARDENT @ 331 Club MPLS

Ryan Paul & THE ARDENT by elli rader

On Thursday March 12, I was able to do a few things that I have wanted to do since my return to Minneapolis. The first was to play the Mad Ripple Hootenanny. I received a text message from local photographer, Sara Montour that said, “You are playing The Hoot”.  I immediately packed up my things for a gig later that evening and ran over.

I very nervously walked in and stood by the door as the show had already been underway for a good 15 minutes. A few sweaty moments later, Eliza Blue called me up to play (noting that we had never met, but are facebook friends). I took my place next to the legendary Brianna Lane (also a facebook friend – jeez) and tried to make my way through my first tune without passing out. I played “La Vita Nuova” and new song “Seen It All”. I was a little struck by the fact that Jim Walsh (aka The Mad Ripple) was not there. I had hoped that he would finally hear me play, but we’ll get back to Walsh later…

I had to rush out of the Hoot to head over to NE Minneapolis to play the 331 Club. THE ARDENT and I had been very anxious to play this venue for quite some time. The 331 is much like playing for friends in a living room. It is warm, inviting, and unassuming. We really felt the freedom to do whatever we wanted on stage because it did not feel like we were playing AT the people in attendance, but rather playing WITH and FOR a group of old chums.  I absolutely LOVED the line up that we put together: Matty O’Reilly and Eliza Blue.

Matty O’Reilly got up and smoked with some of his killer tunes (my favorite is a love song referancing 80’s hair bands). THE ARDENT and I took our time getting on stage and started… “whenever”. The comfort of the room and vibe allowed us to shake off the confines of  a rock show and just play. I think we were mid way into our second song when I glanced to the back of the room to see Mr. Walsh walk through the door…. Told you I would bring him back into this story.

We pulled out a new cover at the 331. It only seemed fitting to attempt our Americana version of “The KKK Took My Baby Away” by The Ramones. I was pleased to see that Eliza Blue followed suit with an interpretation of “Don’t Fear The Reaper”.

We enjoyed our time so much that we are hoping to have our CD Release show at The 331 Club in June. I went to bed that evening overwhelmed by the amount of talent and the warmth of the  Minneapolis music community.

Back into the studio. But we have some stuff on the calendar. Check it out.

I will also be playing with Luke Redfield (and The Floorbirds) at The Nomad World Pub on Friday March 27th . Come on down!
