2009 was a pretty wicked year. We are really looking forward to what is in store for 2010. I’ve been meeting with our new manager from Invisible Button Entertainment and she has some amazing ideas for going forward.

We’ve been working on a video project called “Confessions”. I’d like to give you a preview of Part 6.
Here are some of my confessions about La Vita Nuova, my Jimmy Peterson story, and some of my ideas for the next year. Enjoy!

If you missed our show with Kid Dakota at the Turf, we were able to pull a video from that night as well. Some of it kind of cracks me up…

I’d also like to remind you that there are ALWAYS fresh and free live downloads from our “Live Archive” page. You can sample and download in any format you like.

Thanks for the support in 2009!

Ryan Paul & THE ARDENT with Kid Dakota

In a previous post, I mentioned that the upcoming date at The Turf Club would require it’s own blog entry. The reason behind that is because I finally get the chance to share an evening with a musician who I hold in high esteem.

In 2001, I was passed a copy of Kid Dakota‘s “So Pretty”. I listened to it on repeat for quite some time. In 2004, before leaving Minneapolis, I picked up “The West Is The Future”. I was immediately sucked back into that binge cycle that pissed off friends and roommates (“Are you listening to that again?!?”). Even from afar, I tracked Darren Jackson’s projects and was routinely kicked in the head by them. I have been spinning “A Winner’s Shadow” regularly for the last year.

So here is what happened with December 3rd at The Turf Club… We were given the evening as a headliner. For whatever reason, I felt like I needed to stop looking for openers, went with my gut, and emailed Darren asking him to have Kid Dakota take the evening. I received his affirmative response as I was standing outside of an electric supply store, in the rain, after having bought fuses for a blown amplifier. I was thrilled.

I was also able to pull my good friends Breaksea Caravel to open the evening up. I never really know what to expect with them. Nikolas already emailed me asking if a bicycle powered generator would be ok to bring. This night is going to be pretty wacky.

Also to be noted is the image we are using for this particular show. The photo was taken by a friend in Brooklyn named Alexandra K. She has done work for Beirut, Magnetic Fields, and many others. Check out her website. She’s really talented.

The big news of the end of 2009 is that we signed on with a new management agency. Invisible Button Entertainment will be working with us in 2010 to see what we can get ourselves into in the coming year. I’m walking into this extremely confident and hopeful. I have a feeling that there will be some cool advances. This will also give me a chance to spend more time on writing and rehearsing. Feel free to check out their other bands. I think you’ll recognize a few…

I have decided to start doing some video taping of shows (pre & post). This was my first attempt. There is some funny stuff there, but I couldn’t  include the pieces in their entirety because I was jerking the camera around so much. I’ll get better at it soon…

Around the 20 second mark – Sam Roberts confesses about his Flip Video recorder…
Around the 44 second mark – Steve Goold confesses about his heavy blog traffic and possible suspicions as to where the hits may be coming from…
Around the 55 second mark is video of the debut of our new song “Slow.Steady”

Sam and his band were really great! It was a lot of fun to play and hang out with them. Sam sent me home with some vinyl and some of his ideas about keeping shows interesting.

I get to play with two musicians on the near horizon who I am quite fond of. The first is Sam Roberts… (the second will need it’s own blog entry)

Sam is is a Juno Award winning Canadian rock singer-songwriter, whose 2001 debut release, The Inhuman Condition, became one of the bestselling independent releases in Quebec and Canadian music history. He has the COOLEST story!
He was Born in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, to South African parents. He’s trilingual, speaking English, French, and Spanish. He married his high school sweetheart of 13 years.

I’ve been a fan of Sam Roberts since I heard Chemical City in 2006. I know his career spans longer than that. It is unfortunate that we don’t get to hear a lot of the cool Canadian bands in the States (Tragically who?!?).

So… If you haven’t heard Sam Roberts, check out this video:

Then Come See Us At the 7th St. Entry. November 24, 2009.
