I’m very excited to announce that Ryan Paul & THE ARDENT will be playing the Minneapolis ARTCRANK opening on April 10th. In short, ARTCRANK is a community of local cycling artists who create incredible original work surrounding their passions: cycling and the city. The pieces are inexpensive ($30) and quite possibly the coolest thing(s) you can hang on your wall. More info by clicking on the image above.

If you are not a hardcore biker, this event is still for you. It is a total blast! This will be my second year. Free entry. Free food and drink. And a free set by myself & THE ARDENT. We’ll be playing around 10pm, when it is reasonable to get good and loud. Mark your calendar and BE THERE!

*Now, for my personal note about the gig (why does this always happen?)*

I like ARTCRANK a lot. It starts with the fact that I am a cyclist who enjoys using my bike for the majority of my transportation needs. I like the fact that they write the name in all caps. I like sweet art for $30. I love the people who are involved.

If you click on the ARTCRANK website, you’ll notice a list of partners along the left-hand side. I have a few notes on some mentioned (and some not):

There’s this group of people who work underneath a ton of cool events going on throughout the city. They scope the scene, absorb artists and musicians they like, and try to push them to the front of the proverbial “line”. RPandTA got sucked up by this group quite some time ago.

The (not creepy) illuminati-esque  group I speak of is comprised of, but not limited to, Dena Alspach with Metro Magazine, Kate O’Reilly with O’Reilly Creative, and (my bff) elli rader of Paperlily.

O’Reilly Creative & Paperlily teamed up to put on The Jennefit last week. Dena is quite a bit more visible, and took on The Metro 100 Party in 2009. Those are just a few mentions. The group has conspired on quite a few assignments over the course of the last year.

It was elli who put me face-to-face with, ARTCRANK Director and Curator, Charles Youel, at Art-A-Whirl in 2009. From that point on, I have kept up with Charles and have grown quite fond of his daily musings and receptive spirit. It is/was an honor to be asked to perform at this gallery opening. I woulda been there supporting it anyhow!

Please come support ARTCRANK by purchasing some prints or just hanging out! I don’t see any 331 dates on the working calendar, so this may be your last chance to catch RPandTA for free in the coming months.

P.S. I got my copy of the “Cute Souvenirs Sessions” EP that we will be releasing in June. It’s pretty dang good. Get excited.

We had a wonderful time playing at the 331 Club last night. I left the show all sweaty and with an overwhelming feeling of gratitude. I thought it would be fun to point out a few people who have done selfless things for us.

(In no particular order)
elli rader/paperlily – elli booked RPandTA for a good year and did an amazing job of it. She also takes great photos of us and designed our beautiful website. elli is single-handedly responsible for much of the early word of mouth praise of this band. We all have grown quite close to her. Thank you.

Lily Troia/Invisible Button Entertainment
– Lily and crew opted to take us under the powerful wing of Invisible Button. There is so much going on behind the scenes. Lily’s dedication to all of her bands is admirable (and seemingly impossible, but she pulls it off). Thank you.

Janey Winterbauer
– Janey has been a constant support for us. She sang on La Vita Nuova and rocked our CD Release show last summer. In addition, she has agreed to follow me on some wild tangents and even recorded a demo in my living room. She is a talented singer and musician. Thank you.

Matt Patrick
– Matt is working with us on our new EP. He has been a champion with meeting our schedule and budget. This EP is going to sound great! It’s an honor to be working with such an accomplished musician/engineer/producer. Thank you.

Adam Byer – Adam is almost finished with his degree in post production for film, but he continues to record tracks with me. The first, “Nothing Can Destroy”, appeared on La Vita Nuova. The second will appear on the Cute Souvenirs EP. He manages to squeeze these projects in with his own film projects and band. Thank you.

Jason Woolery/The 331 Club – I am not certain how it happens, but we always seem to have our best performances in that tiny club in NE Minneapolis. We’re indebted to the 331 for allowing us to come back over and over. I love that there is a venue in Minneapolis that provides free music and still treats it’s bands with enough class that we all want to keep playing there. Thank you.

Dena Alspach/Metro Magazine – Dena has had to have seen us play more than a handful of shows. She always seems to pop up when I am least expecting it. She also invited us to play the 2009 Metro 100 Party and plugs our shows when she isn’t too busy juggling the media world of Minneapolis. Thank you.

Sarah Sandusky/First Ave/7th St Entry – Sarah is a total sweetheart and continues to book us along with bands that we really enjoy. It is seriously not uncommon for me to tell her that I love something on the calendar and to have her try to find a way to get us involved in the show. She is consistently professional and rad at the same time. I imagine the two are tough to do concurrently. Thank you.

I’d also like to thank all of the bands who share bills with us. It is such a privilege to share the stage with such talent. I can’t list them all, but we are talking about Kid Dakota, Sam Roberts Band, Brad Senne, Brian Just, Eliza Blue, Breaksea Caravel, Rock Plaza Central, Luke Redfield, Backyard Tire Fire, John Swardson, Holly Newsom, Painted Saints, Al Church & State, Daredevil Christopher Wright, Solid Gold, the list goes on and on and on… Thank you.

Lastly, I would like to thank THE ARDENT for all of the hard work and sticking with me through all of this. It’s been a cool year and a half. You guys are some of the most talented players I know and am humbled to have you make my songs sound the way they do. Thank you.

We were pleased to see that Ryan Paul’s top 5 local & national records of 2009 were published by Metro Magazine. Here’s a clip:

“As the year comes to a close, you’ve probably been inundated by year and decade end lists. We thought that you might want to hear what Twin Cities musician’s favorite albums are, rather than getting our two cents. It’s pretty hard to hone in on the local music scene, even for those of us who are attuned to national music trends. So, we used the good old Internet and got in touch with some of our favorite local artists.”

1. Grizzly Bear // Veckitamest – This album gets my best of 2009. I’ve heard all of the banter about whether or not it will last. I’ve heard all the talk about them “selling out” with Veckitamest. Frankly, I don’t care. I’ve listened to Grizzly Bear since Horn of Plenty and sister band Department of Eagles. There is certainly a difference in Veckitamest, but it is one that I have seen coming for awhile.

Daniel Rossen has been growing into his pop sensibility very slowly and the maturation grew into this record. It is an absolute masterpiece. I can’t find a single fault in it. The album lacks nothing. Can they keep it up? Surely. However, Daniel and the boys may grow into something else and I’m sure that will be just as jaw dropping as the rest of their career.

Favorite Track: “Ready, Able”

2. Jim O’Rourke // The Visitor
Jim O’Rourke has played on well over 100 records in the past 20 years, but left an 8 year gap from his last solo album. Anyone who knows me heard my excitement for weeks leading up to the release of The Visitor. I didn’t want to get my hopes up, but managed to anyhow. When I got my pre-ordered copy, I nervously put it in to find that it was only one track. One 38 minute track. (This isn’t rare for O’Rourke’s noise records) This album (or song) had over 200 separate recorded parts and they were all layered perfectly. I liked how one reviewer called it “genre-hopping melange of organic and electronic influences”. I’ll even get behind Pitchfork’s statement that The Visitor “plays hide-and-go-seek with dozens of instruments, textures, and motifs before refusing to deliver the climax you might have expected”. I mainly summed it up with a dropped jaw. I have listened to it dozens of times and I haven’t even begun to soak it all in.

3. Elvis Perkins in Dearland // ST/Doomsday EP
I liked Elvis Perkins’ solo effort. “Ash Wednesday” was a great start, but it was missing something. It was missing Dearland. I’m not sure how these guys seemed to pick up on Elvis’ behind the beat writing, but they did. I am including Doomsday EP because it was recorded at the same time as the self titled album and is mainly B-Sides. I can’t wait to hear what Elvis and Dearland do next.

Favorite Track: “Shampoo”

4. Phosphorescent // To Willie
Am I crazy to pick a cover album in my top 5? Possibly. But I feel that this particular cover album is the best Willie Nelson cover album ever done. This particular album got more spins on my player than many others on this list. Done in the same vein as Willie Nelson’s To Lefty, this album is brilliant. I knew, from the second I saw the cover, that I was going to fall head over heels with To Willie. Many have tried to cover Willie Nelson and nearly all have failed. This album plays Willie like a young Willie would do Willie. Houck spares no detail and even playing nearly every guitar solo with the melody line of the song (just like Willie). If you want to cover Willie, be Willie. Don’t try to put a new spin on the Red Headed Stranger. He is one of a kind.

Favorite Track: “Can I Sleep In Your Arms” (There are moments where I actually prefer this to the original. I know. It’s practically heresy.)

5. The Bad Plus // For All I Care
Every single time I have seen The Bad Plus play live, I have always stood in line to get in early and plant my butt in front of Dave King’s drum kit. That was, until Wendy Lewis started singing with them. The two times that I witnessed The Bad Plus (joined by Wendy Lewis), Wendy seemed to be the only force that could drive my eyes and ears from King’s wicked drumming. I happened to run into Lewis at a Dosh show in 2008 and listened to her talk about what was going on down at Pachyderm. I could not wait to hear this record. The day I picked it up, I sat in my room short of breath. Seeing them live, a friend had to remind me to inhale and exhale. It goes without saying that Dave King is masterful on “For All I Care”. I don’t need to tell you that Reid Anderson is a hell of a bass player. Ethan’s piano playing is about as dependable as his wardrobe. This is a wonderful record.
